Welcome to Matilda Harris Elementary

Home of the Jaguars, Matilda Harris Elementary School (MHES) is named after Matilda Tompkins (Ann) Harris. Matilda Harris was the first female African American teacher in Camden County who began her 60 year educational career in 1871. Admired for her personal qualities and her leadership abilities, the General Assembly of the State of Georgia designated the Camden County Training School as the Matilda Harris Elementary School on February 18, 1964.

The faculty and staff of Matilda Harris Elementary encourage and motivate all students to be successful, lifelong learners.

Purpose
We recognize and accept students as individuals and provide a quality learning environment to prepare them to become productive, responsible citizens.
